Information on a building's energy use is the critical first step in making the necessary changes and choices to reduce energy costs. ASHRAE's Building Energy Quotient program informs owners and operators, tenants and prospective buyers on the energy use of buildings, similar to a nutrition label on food or miles per gallon ratings on cars. The program, known as bEQ, includes an In Operation (operational) rating for commercial buildings. bEQ provides an easily understood scale to convey a building's energy use in comparison to similar buildings and climate zone, while also providing building owners with building-specific information to highlight potential energy saving opportunities. Building Energy Labeling: What's the Point?A building energy labeling program provides information on the potential and actual energy use of buildings.Beyond the benefit received by individual building owners and managers, the increased availability of building data—specifically the relationship between the design and operation of buildings—will be a valuable research tool for the building community.
